Brian Heggie

Brian passed away peacefully at Grand River Hospital on February 13, 2025.  The deep, lasting love, he shared with his wife and best friend, Glenna, led them on many travels and adventures for almost 50 years.

Brian’s joy of life and his love of people were evident through his years as a High School Captain at GCI, Lecturer, Teacher, Coach and Educational Administrator. Brian began his professional teaching career in Thunder Bay. He spent several years lecturing at Lakehead University before moving home to Waterloo County.

He taught and then worked as a Vice-Principal and Principal at many local high schools. He positively inspired many lives through his teaching and coaching. Brian loved sports but football was his passion. He played the game as a youth, played for McMaster University then went to tryout for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He went on to play for the Mustangs Football team in Thunder Bay before entering the teaching field. These experiences led him to coach high school football teams. His coaching skills led to many school championships.

After retirement he still lived life to the fullest and was very involved in the community.  He was Events Chair for the Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame, Chair of the Resident and Family Council at Fairview Mennonite Home, Board Member Waterloo Region Police Service Board, President of RTO District 11, cabinet member Cambridge United Way, Cambridge member of Parliament’s Citizen Advisory Committee, chair of the 100th Preston Reunion, driver for Food for Kids and Starter for the Cambridge Skating Races (started by his father George over 90 years ago.) He also was a long time member and past president of CPLA.

Being a Geographer, travel was always a priority in his life.  He was fortunate enough to have visited all seven continents.  Brian also loved cruising and had wonderful adventures with family and friends. The beautiful drive along the North-Shore of Lake Superior and family trips to Scotland were top of his list.

Brian was a definite Foodie. He enjoyed super hot chicken wings, a good spicy Caesar, French Onion soup, any flavour ice cream and butter tarts.

Brian was predeceased by his loving parents, Evelyn and George Heggie and older brother Doug. In addition to Glenna, he is survived by brother Robin (Janet), sister- in-law Sandi (Allan),  nephews Jeff (Deanne), Andrew (Tracy), Tim (Melissa) and niece Jennifer as well as grandnieces Keltie, Caitlyn (Craig), Shannon (Darryll), Kennedy, Ainsley and grandnephews  Matt (Sydney), Kurtis , Travis and grand-grandnephew Ruaridh. They will all miss his great sense of humour and the life lessons he shared along the way. His extended family and numerous dear friends will always keep him close in their hearts.

Brian’s family included many of the four-legged kind. He loved his 6 Old English Sheep dogs.  In more recent years, he had rescued cats. Murphy and Mac miss him already.
