Dean Christopher Oberle

1959- 2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dean Christopher Oberle on Monday December 30th, 2024 at Grand River Hospital at the age of 65 years.

Dean was born in Exeter and raised in Waterloo, attending St. David CSS, Bluevale CI, and Lougheed Business College. He worked for many years with TD Bank, in a variety of roles and most recently at the Cambridge Golf Club. Most important to him was a lifelong love of all things athletic, excelling in any sport, especially hockey and baseball.

Beloved husband, best friend, and soulmate of Cheryl Oberle (nee Lacey) married for over 42 years, and together in love since 1977.

Loving father of Shawn, and Amanda (Adam) Jones, and puppy-dad to Beau. Adored son of Barbara Oberle (nee Goldsworthy) and son-in-law to David and Herta Lacey. Admired and respected by siblings Pam (Jerry) McCulligh, Lori (John) Pollice, Cheryl Bauer, Tim (Marcella) Oberle, and Don (Heidi) Oberle, and special brother-in-law to Scott and Jeff (Gaby) Lacey. Mentor, friend, and all-around entertainer to many cousins, nieces and nephews who admired him for his fun-loving nature and carefree spirit.

Predeceased by his father, William Oberle (1995) and brother Robert Oberle (2022).

Dean had a heart as big as his character, an infectious smile and engaging personality, and a work ethic and dedication that was unmatched. Dean and Cheryl were presented with their greatest challenge of all in late June, 2024 when Dean was diagnosed with lung cancer. With a “we got this” mantra, a positive mindset, and forward-looking, fighting spirit, Dean maintained his active lifestyle, continuing to follow his passion for officiating, and love for family and friends to the very end, while maintaining his quick wit, sense of humour, and positive presence.

Special thanks for the expert care and compassion from Dr. Califaretti, Grand River Cancer Centre; Dr. Mithoowani, London Regional Cancer Centre; and the full staff at GRH 6th floor, B wing.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday January 31, with details to be shared in the near future, via social media and word-of-mouth.

In lieu of flowers, and in honour of Dean’s contributions to officiating the sports of baseball and volleyball, his family is in the process of creating a legacy award for young officials in both sports, as his roles in mentorship and skill development gave Dean so much joy and fulfillment.

Messages and condolences may be left for the family at www.tricitycremations.com or 519.772.1237. Please visit Dean’s obituary notice on Facebook.
