John Bruce Reid

1941 – 2024

With sadness we announce that Bruce passed away peacefully surrounded by  his loving family at Freeport Palliative Care Unit, Kitchener, Ontario on Saturday May 25, 2024 at the age of 82.

Beloved husband and best friend of Elaine (née Yorke) for over 59 years. Loving father of Lesley Lowes (Michael) and Bryan Reid (Kaireen Patton).   Proud grandfather of Alex (Zack), Maddie, Spade and Daminh.  Dear Brother of Sharon Reid and Marilyn Starr (Lloyd).

Predeceased by his parents Fred and Lena Reid and by his brother, Bob.

He will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews, colleagues, friends and neighbours.

Bruce was born and raised in Belleville, Ontario where he attended Avondale Public School and Quinte Secondary School, after which he completed his Bachelor of Science – Mechanical Engineering degree at Queen’s University  (1964) and his MBA at McMaster University (1969).

Upon graduation, Bruce joined General Motors in St. Catharines, Ontario as a junior engineer and held many interesting positions, finishing his career in Oshawa as the Director, Office of the Environment for GM Canada in 2001.

Retirement allowed Bruce to spend time volunteering with Community Care Durham, participate as an active member of St. Mark’s United Church, and travel to many destinations with Elaine, extended family and good friends.  Bruce’s photographs have captured many memories for us to cherish.

Family and friends are invited to St. Mark’s United Church, 201 Centre St. S.,

Whitby, Ontario on Tuesday June 4, 2024.  A memorial visitation will be held from 11 am – noon.  A memorial service will commence at 12 noon followed by a reception in the church hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Lung Association or St. Mark’s United Church as expressions of sympathy.
